Teeth Straightening (Orthodontics)

Cosmetic Orthodontics

This is a branch of dentistry which is concerned with correcting misaligned teeth purely for cosmetic reasons and focuses on the teeth visible when you smile. This is a particularly good treatment if you have suffered mild relapse after orthodontic treatment, or you have misaligned front teeth only. Treatment can typically be completed within a short space of time and often much quicker than conventional orthodontics.

If you are concerned about the uneven or crooked arrangement of your teeth, then you may want to consider straightening. There are a number of ways this can be done depending upon the severity of your misalignment and your general oral health. A straight smile can improve confidence in your appearance, and help maintain good dental hygiene. Our dentists will assess your needs at our practice and recommend the best teeth straightening option for you.

Tooth Straightening Options at Ghyllmount

Clear Smile Brace

Many people are not happy with how their front teeth look when they smile but are put off wearing braces because they don't want to wear visible metal braces for a year or two. ClearSmile Brace is a rapid and aesthetic orthodontic system that focuses mainly on the front 10 teeth. The speed and less visible appearance of ClearSmile Brace make it a highly appealing option that can fit anyone's lifestyle.

This system accelerates the straightening process, reducing it from the usual two years to between 3 and 12 months.

A consultation is essential, as in some cases a more comprehensive approach is needed.

Everyone is unique and treatments must be performed on an individual basis. As treatment differs from person to person, an initial appointment is required for precise prices.  Following a consultation the appropriate treatment plan can be agreed and an accurate cost can be given.

Tooth Whitening

Teeth can discolour as we age, as well as picking up stains from everyday things that we eat and drink. Surface stain can be removed by painless air abrasion and polishing. Tooth whitening involves the uses of a hydrogen peroxide gel to lighten the colour of the enamel of your teeth without removing any of the surface layer. This is a safe procedure, and dentists can prescribe the right strength of hydrogen peroxide for tooth whitening.

It stands to reason that to whiten teeth safely, there must be no open cavities or untreated gum disease and existing crowns and fillings will not change colour. For this reason it is illegal for anyone other than a registered dental professional to provide tooth whitening or advise on its provision.

We use a home-whitening tray system, which will whiten teeth steadily and gives the most stable colour change. The trays can be kept and used for any future top-up treatments.

How does home whitening work

We consider this to be the best way of whitening teeth for the most effective and stable result. It is done using thin trays which hold the whitening gel against your teeth. They can be worn over night or for shorter periods during the day and normally whitening is completed in 3 weeks. Once whitening is completed, the trays can be kept and reused for top up treatment every 3-6 months. Crowns or fillings will not change colour with tooth whitening, and any replacement restorations that may be needed will be discussed with you before treatment is started.

A consultation is essential, as in some cases preliminary dental treatment will be needed before safe tooth whitening can be provided.

In line with General Dental Council Regulation we are no longer able to sell whitening gel over the counter. Should you require additional gel you and your trays will need to be assessed to ensure the mouth is healthy and the fit of the trays are still good. You can either bring your trays along to your regular dental appointment or book an assessment appointment at an additional cost of £5.00.

FAQ

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with oxygen releasing gel under supervision is safe for teeth and gums. It will not affect teeth structure, enamel, fillings or restorations.

Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience temporary teeth sensitivity during the treatment. These symptoms usually disappear within 1-2 days of interruption or completion of the treatment.

How long do the results last?

Your teeth will be noticeably whiter than they were, and the effect can last up to 2-3 years. However, exposure to tobacco, certain foods and drinks such as red wine, tea and coffee will gradually stain teeth again over time. We recommend “top-up whitening” i.e. about one session a month to maintain a whiter colour for longer.

Implants

Do you:

  • Hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth?
  • Feel your dentures are not secure?
  • Have difficulty chewing?
  • Wish you could smile, speak, and eat in comfort and with confidence, but are missing one or more teeth?

If so, then dental implants could be for you. Dental implants are now a part of main stream dentistry, and can replace any number of teeth, from a single tooth to a complete set.

People lose teeth all the time either through trauma (when teeth are knocked out) or due to decay, gum disease or older age. Whatever the reason for losing your teeth, they need to be replaced both for cosmetic and functional reasons. Dental implants provide a longer term solution, slow down bone loss and preserve nearby healthy tooth tissue.

Would you like natural looking teeth?

Implants are the best solution for permanent replacement of one or more teeth.

With implants, you can laugh and eat as you please knowing that your teeth are securely in place.

Quite simply, you can count on natural looking teeth and the attractive, confident smile that comes with it.

Neil Sampson has extensive intra oral dental implant experience and has been placing dental implants since 1999.

He has long experience of advanced restorative and aesthetic treatment and is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology.
